Manhasset Real Estate

Settlers have lived in the Manhasset area since the 17th century, leaving behind period homes you can still purchase today -- including Victorian, Craftsman and Dutch Colonial homes. Churches and older mansions offer picturesque views into the people who called the hamlet home in years gone by.

Much like many of the neighboring areas In the 19th Century, Manhasset was a farming community. In 1898, the Long Island Railroad arrived, bringing with it wealthy New Yorkers looking for country homes with easy transportation to New York City.   The construction of the Long Island Rail Road, which presently provides direct and convenient access to Manhattan, helped to transform this area into an upscale commuter area for businessmen and women working in New York.  In his 1925 novel The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald referred to the area of Manhasset Bay as “East Egg”, an area known for old money and wealthy New York families.  The Manhasset name was adopted in 1840 and comes from the native word "Manhansett", meaning "island neighborhood".

Manhasset is formed by North and South Strathmore, Strathmore Village, Strathmore Vanderbilt, Shorehaven, Terrace Manor and Norgate, and includes three incorporated villages—Munsey Park, Plandome and Plandome Heights—and parts of three others—Flower Hill, Plandome Manor and North Hills. In the 2010 Newsweek magazine's annual list of the top American high schools, Manhasset is ranked 87th nationally out of the 1,700 schools evaluated.

A long list of notables call Manhasset home, including NFL Hall of Famer Billy Crudup and comedian Ray Goulding. The Harbor Links Golf Complex includes 18 hole, 9 hole and mini golf courses. Bar Beach Park offers beach access, picnic areas, swimming, and sports. Throughout summer the residents can enjoy free concerts at the Sunset Park. Nearby communities offer a science museum, aquarium and even more golf. The Manhasset School district includes two Elementary Schools, one Middle School and one High School with just over 2,909 enrolled students combined.
